Three members of law enforcement perished and more than a dozen people sustained injuries in what appears to be intentional blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The explosion took place as officers and emergency crews approached the property near the city of Verona to execute an eviction order for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals were arrested at the location and one more individual who escaped subsequent to the blast was found not long after. The trio have been transported to the hospital.

The blast could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the scene displayed the building left as a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” said the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that previous tries had been made to remove the three family members in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The president of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, stated the residence was subject to an court order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to engage the siblings who had locked themselves into the house. When the police arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the residents caused the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief the police commander told news outlets.

A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion precisely impacted our members,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also found at the residence, the minister said.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the blast included an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The prosecutor thought the detonation had taken place on a floor above the entrance and told the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the incident, he said members had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the propane tanks being turned on”.

Local Response

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors stated to Italian media, mentioning that the three had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in honoring the three officers who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
