No less than 64 Dead in Rio de Janeiro's Biggest Police Raid on Criminal Groups
No less than 64 civilians lost their lives in a security raid against the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's history.
Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during the security mission in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials reported. In excess of 80 people were detained.
Intense confrontations commenced when around 2,500 police forces entered the area on the morning of the operation. The Red Command responded with gunfire, setting fire to barriers and dropping bombs from drones, officials stated.
The International human rights organization stated it felt "appalled" by the police operation, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".
Raid Aftermath
The area of favelas close to Rio's airport is seen as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.
Government representatives stated a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Numerous individuals were wounded, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Residents have compared the hillside area - home to about 300,000 people - to a "war zone" since the raid started.
