Russell Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Remarks

NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this Tuesday, reacting to recent criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."

The quarterback's remarks directly referenced the notorious bounty scandal issue from 2009-11, when Payton led the Saints.

During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering aggressive tackles on rival teams. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the league for one season.

What Sparked the Latest Dispute

The quarterback's reaction came after Payton made comments after the Broncos' historic 33-32 victory over the Giants. Payton remarked that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson instead of Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.

Context of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • The quarterback joined the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245M extension.
  • The team went 4-11 in his debut year before the team brought in Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a stint in broadcasting.
  • Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 season, a decision that ensured the quarterback from getting injured.

Had Wilson remained on the team by spring 2024, his $37M salary for 2025 would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly split between the quarterback and his mentor.
