The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"This is a unique game where a young woman harboring multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate souls, each with unique fears and drives. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.

Based on showcased gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes show the protagonist navigating a desolate church.

An Environment of Individual Dread

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."

The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision

Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with nurses all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

After a player have deduced a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
