A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to Melbourne Park

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old icon will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the second round before exiting in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

Venus had previously revealed in November her plans to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, a fortnight prior to the Australian Open. Organizers noted that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a following week, just before the start of play at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to be back in the country and looking forward to playing during the Australian summer," Venus said. "I have experienced so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m thankful for the chance to return to a place that has been so significant to my career."

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will represent the 22nd time she has appeared in the main draw.

Setting a Fresh Benchmark

Officials pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Australian Open main draw, surpassing the mark formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the first round at the venue in 2015.
