The White Sox Secure Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on an Major Two-Year Agreement.

In a notable move for their rebuilding roster, the Chicago White Sox have officially added infielder Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract bringing in the high-profile player.

Deal Structure and Incentives

The agreement grants a seven-figure signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, in addition to compensation of $16M for the 2026 season and $17 million for the 2027 year.

Additionally, Murakami's compensation is subject to escalators based on award achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for being named the MVP award.
  • $500,000 for placing second or third in MVP voting.
  • $250,000 for ranking fourth through 10th.
  • Another $250,000 for earning the ROY honor.

The contract also stipulates that he cannot be assigned to the minors without his consent and allows him to become a free agent at the end of the deal. Further benefits include a team-provided interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.

Transfer Payment and Team Legacy

As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of over $6.5 million to the Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's Central League. The Japanese club are also entitled to a supplemental fee of any triggered incentive payments.

Murakami will become the fourth Japanese-born to suit up for the White Sox, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu previously coached Murakami while both were in Japan.

Career Highlights

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who turns 26 on February 2nd, bolsters a promising lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are finished with a 60-102 season, finishing at the bottom in the AL Central but representing a significant improvement from the previous campaign.

A two-time league MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami made history with a historic 2022 season where he hit 56 homers, breaking the single-season record for a NPB hitter formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was curtailed to just 56 appearances due to an muscle issue. Even with striking out often, he batted .273 with 22 home runs and 47 driven in.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 career batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBIs, and 977 Ks in 892 contests. Early in his career playing mainly at first base, he has since transitioned to third base.

International Pedigree

Murakami's heroics were on global view during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he drove in a game-ending two-base hit that drove in teammates for a thrilling 6-5 victory. The following day in the final against the Team USA, he slugged a game-tying home run in the second inning, helping Japan's 3-2 3-2 victory.

The lefty slugger is scheduled to be officially presented at a introductory event on Monday.
