Vince Zampella, the mind behind the wildly popular franchise Call of Duty, has died in a traffic collision in California aged 55.

Zampella's death was verified by Electronic Arts, the parent company of Respawn Entertainment, the development studio that he helped create.

The influential game designer lost his life when his automobile collided and burst into flames on a freeway in LA on Sunday, US media outlets report.

"This is a heartbreaking loss, and we stand with his family and friends, those closest to him, and the countless individuals inspired by his creative vision," a representative from Electronic Arts stated.
