‘We Will Miss Him Terribly’: Meg Ryan Shares Emotional Homage to Rob Reiner
Meg Ryan has published a heartfelt tribute to the deceased director Rob Reiner, who was her director in the beloved rom-com When Harry Met Sally.
A Devastating Incident
Reiner was found dead with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, at their residence in LA this past weekend.
“We will miss this man so deeply…” Ryan shared on Instagram, accompanying a photo of them together. “We thank you, Rob and Michele, for your belief in true love, fairy tales, and laughter. Your trust in people's goodness and your love for this nation are remembered.”
Court Case Developments
Reiner’s son Nick, 32, faces two counts of first-degree murder and appeared in court today. He’s being held without bail. Reports indicate that Reiner’s daughter Romy discovered her father deceased.
“It is my belief that from this horror, positive change and understanding can emerge,” Ryan went on to write. “I don’t know, but my guess is that they would want that to be hopeful and humane, to be something that brings us all to a greater understanding of one another and to some peace.”
Family Members Issue a Message
Reiner’s surviving children Jake and Romy released a message today. “Language fails to capture the daily agony we endure,” they said. “Losing our parents in such a horrific way is a devastation beyond comprehension. They were more than parents; they were our closest confidants.”
Peers Pay Their Respects
Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, also paid tribute to Reiner through a message shared yesterday along with names including Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.
“His comedic touch was beyond compare, his love of getting the music of the dialogue just right, and his sharpening of the edge of a drama was simply elegant,” the tribute noted. “He cherished performers and improved scribes. His greatest gift was freedom. If you had an idea, he listened, he brought you into the process. Everyone felt like part of a crew. His direction was a gift, but his legacy is broader.”
A Lasting Cinematic Legacy
When Harry Met Sally was a critical and commercial success in 1989, earning over $93 million globally and securing Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
Rob Reiner first encountered Michele Singer Reiner during the production of When Harry Met Sally. The pair were introduced by Barry Sonnenfeld, a friend and director.
Reiner’s notable filmography featured classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were together in marriage for 36 years.
