Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
